Gesher Grades 5 - 6

T’filah Credits – As part of the Gesher curriculum, All Gesher students (Grades 5-6) must attend 6 worship services per year , not including Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. FOUR of these T’fillot have to be either at Temple Emanu El or as part of a Temple Emanu El sponsored event.

Grade Five - CHAI Curriculum: We will be using the CHAI curriculum, developed by the Union For Reform Judaism and designed to provide students with a foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning and living. The curriculum is based on “Torah, Avodah, and G'milut Chasadim;" Study, Worship and Acts of Loving-Kindness. This year students will focus on Nevi'im (The Book of Prophets). Students will see a direct relationship between being a member of a community and our behaviors, through study of the relationship between Am Yisrael (Jewish people) and the Land in the Torah and acts of g'milut chasadim reaching out to the community.

Hebrew: Students will study the Avodah (worship) strand during Hebrew, which focuses on the prayer as a discipline and learning process. The students continue the decoding process as they explore the meaning of the blessings within the Amidah.

 

Grade Six - CHAI Curriculum: We will be using the CHAI curriculum, developed by the Union For Reform Judaism and designed to provide students with a foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning and living. The curriculum is based on “Torah, Avodah, and G'milut Chasadim;" Study, Worship and Acts of Loving-Kindness. Students will begin the year with an exploration of Israel followed by participation in a community wide curriculum called "Count Me In." They will end their year by uncovering G'milut Chasadim on a more universal level and how we can widen the circles of our involvement.

Hebrew: Students will study the Avodah (worship) strand during Hebrew, which focuses on the components of the Torah service, the role of the sh’liach tzibur (prayer leader) and answer the questions, “What is Revelation and how do we experience it? Is there a human role in divine revelation?” Students will continue to work on decoding and fluency skills of the prayers taught in previous years. In addition, they concentrate on their B’nai Mitzvah skills. They learn the structure of the Torah service.

K'riat B'Yachad (Reading Together)

TEE offers complimentary Hebrew support to any Grade 3 through 6 student, if recommended by their teacher, through our special supportive program called K’riat B’Yachad, Reading Together. Students will receive up to eight individual sessions with a private tutor. The classes will take place on a scheduled basis worked out with tutor and family.
